It’s Two Times Two At Queen’s College, Taunton Lodge

Saturday 11th May saw the brethren of Queen’s College, Taunton Lodge 6988 gather at the Taunton Masonic Hall for what has been over 25 years in the waiting: a double second. The Worshipful Master was there bright and early to ensure that this meeting was the great success that is now expected from Queen’s; he introduced a mysterious agenda item (held over from a crowded Installation agenda in March). Richard Baker, the outgoing Lodge Comms Officer was thanked for the sterling and splendid job he has done for the past 14 years in this role, as well as 20 years previously as Queen’s Treasurer. The Worshipful Master presented Richard with a framed photo collage (created by Jim Wiltshire) reflecting aspects of his time as LCO. Richard responded by thanking the brethren for the special gift, to which a case of wine was added at the conclusion of the Festive Board.

The next important matter was to receive the Provincial Travelling Trowel, on its first step throughout various SW Somerset lodges. Ray Conneely, the Provincial Grand Mentor stood in to present this special trowel, along with Tom Nutt, to the Worshipful Master.

The Lodge then got down the highlight of the afternoon, a double second ceremony; Brothers Charlie White and Fraser Bell, with a combination of enthusiasm and awe progressed through the passing, with the ceremony culminating in probably the best rendition of the Initiates’ Charge by Jim Virjee. This received applause commensurate with the effort he had clearly put in for the candidates’ ceremony. Charlie and Fraser came out of the other end of their ceremony, with faces each telling their own story of this unique occasion.

At the Festive Board after the meeting 34 brethren sat for dinner, enabling all to enjoy a superb curry meal and all the trimmings provided by 5* Karen, Hayley and the catering team at Taunton Masonic Hall. With the Queen’s brethren and the generous visitors, the evening managed to raise charitable funds of a further £600 towards the Master’s chosen charity of St Margaret’s Hospice, Taunton. Queen’s next meeting will be a double third on 12th July 2024 at the Taunton Masonic Hall.
